Student Movement in the Early 1990s and Park Seung-hee

In late April 1991, Kang Kyung-dae, a student at Myongji University, was killed by police beating while protesting calling for the resignation of the Roh Tae-woo regime and anti-Americanism. A large-scale protest was held at CNU to condemn police brutality. During the demonstration, Park Seung-hee sprayed thinner on her body and set herself ablaze to death in front of her student center, chanting slogans such as the overthrow of the dictatorship. Park died after 21 days of struggle in the hospital.

"In this age, we cannot afford to shed tears. Now, it is a time when we need warriors, not martyrs. These two words have always remained in my heart. No words can do my apology for leaving everyone this way, but please survive to the end and fight hard. I am boldly leaving with the hope that my path will instill anti-Americanism in each of the 20,000 students and make them work together to overthrow the regime. I am sorry. But I have no regret.”
