On October 26, 1979, President Park Chung-hee was assassinated by Kim Jae-gyu, the head of the Korea Central Intelligence Agency, and the Yushin order collapsed. In the spring of 1980, the people longed for democracy with a new Constitutional Law. In response, university students, opposition parties, and democratic figures across the country held a series of large-scale rallies and demonstrations to condemn the anti-democratic conspiracy of the new military and promote democracy.
