On the dawn of May 27, martial law forces entered the Provincial Office, which was occupied by citizen militia, YMCA, YWCA, Jeonil Building, and Gwangju Park and a gunfight broke out between the two sides. Many civilians were killed in this gunfight and Gwangju fell under the control of martial law forces: It recorded 207 dead, 2,392 injured, and 987 other victims (List of the man of merit related to May 18 Democratization Movement).
