“Democracy and Human Rights in Asia III: Discrimination, Resistance, and Civil Society”, which is being published this time, is under the theme of “Democracy and Human Rights in Asia”, which Chonnam National University’s May 18 Research Institute has been carrying out since 2005 with support from the National Research Foundation of Korea. This is the third result of weaving the research results of support projects. The research project <Democracy and Human Rights in Asia> is being carried out in three phases and nine years, and as of 2011, the research in the second phase and the third year is being carried out.
Discussions on state violence, resistance movements, and participatory democracy in Korea have been receiving a lot of attention recently, but attempts to broaden their horizons to the Asian region are still insignificant. As in this study, when the growth process of democracy and human rights in Asia is set as the research topic, it is appropriate to examine and compare the institutionalization process through the ideological background, experience and development process of national violence and resistance movement, participatory democracy. Therefore, this study tried to reveal the growth process of oriental democracy and human rights, different from Western experiences, through the perspectives of state violence, resistance movement, and participatory democracy. In addition, through this study, 'Asian democracy and human rights growth process' and further 'Asian democracy and human rights orientation' can be explored by comparing and examining Asia with similar but unique historical experiences since modern times. I wanted to pursue the work of clarification.
